Using Creative Stitches in Rug Hooking

New Brunswick College of Craft & Design
457 Queen Street
Fredericton, NB

edVentures Workshop

Using a comic-like pattern of a cat or dog, participants will practice making creative stitches such as proddy, spiral seed stitch, basket weave and more.  They will learn how and when to use creative stitches in their own mats.

Instructions will also be given on turning their cat or dog into a three dimensional, free-standing character.

A basic knowledge in rug hooking is required for this project.

Material fees per participant covers a 12" x 9" cat or dog pattern drawn on linen.

Wools for the project as well as a backing fabric and fibre fill will be available at cost; however students are encouraged to bring their own materials.

This is a perfect project to use up scraps of wool or "worms" from other projects.

Students will need to bring wool cutters with #4, #5, or #6 blades if they have them.

A medium rug hook, frame and sharp scissors are required.

Instructor: Mary Grant
Mary Grant has been rug hooking for 15 years and teaching for the past five.  She is a member of the Heritage Rug Hooking Guild and the Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia, including its Teachers Branch. Having a Masters in Industrial and Vocational Education has also been a great asset to imparting her knowledge to others.  Mary especially enjoys creating three dimensional mats by using techniques from the early settlers of Waldoboro Maine.  Vivid colours and careful blending of shades add to the finished result.  Mary has taught beginner courses, and more advanced shading and sculpted rug hooking locally and in the Atlantic Provinces.  She has demonstrated her work at the Fredericton Library and Fredericton Region Museum, giving visitors of all ages an opportunity try their hand at this traditional craft.
